Liberal Rick Ellsmere is vying to become the next MPP for Timiskaming-Cochrane, having put his name forward for the upcoming provincial election.
He said his passion for public service runs deep.
“As a volunteer firefighter, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges Timiskaming-Cochrane communities face—whether it’s emergency response, infrastructure needs, or affordability concerns,” Ellsmere explained. “My experience as a hockey coach and as President of the Englehart Minor Hockey Association (EMHA) has also reinforced my belief in the power of community. I want to take that same dedication and leadership to Queen’s Park to advocate for real, meaningful change for the people of our riding.”
He emphasized that his top three priorities are: **Affordability & Cost of Living**: Ensuring families can afford housing, groceries, and everyday essentials; **Healthcare & First Responders**: Strengthening our healthcare system and supporting frontline workers, including emergency responders; **Community Growth & Youth Opportunities**: Investing in local infrastructure, recreation programs, and economic initiatives that help families and young people succeed.
He also understands how critical safe and efficient transportation is for residents, businesses, and emergency responders. Ellsmere stressed that highway infrastructure needs to keep up with growth, and delays in projects like the Field/Marten River cutoff rest area and Cochrane bypass are unacceptable.
“I will push for immediate action on these projects by holding the government accountable and ensuring promised commitments are met,” Ellsmere reiterated. “Investing in highway improvements means safer roads, better transportation for goods and services, and a stronger local economy. I will work closely with municipal and provincial partners to ensure these projects are not just promises, but completed realities that benefit our community.”
Ellsmere mentioned how he has spent his life serving his community—not just talking about issues, but rolling up his sleeves and making a difference.
“Whether it’s responding to emergencies as a firefighter, mentoring young athletes as a hockey coach, or leading local programs as President of EMHA,” Ellsmere explained, “I understand the needs of our residents at a grassroots level. My leadership is built on real action and community involvement, not just politics.”
He said he has always believed in open, honest communication.
“Just as I’ve done as a coach and community leader, I will continue to be present—hosting regular town halls, engaging on social media, and keeping my door open for constituents,” Ellsmere expressed. “Transparency and accountability are at the core of my leadership style.”
Ellsmere explained how, as a volunteer firefighter, he has had to make quick, life-saving decisions under pressure.
“In those moments, teamwork, training, and calm decision-making are essential. Similarly, as President of EMHA, I’ve had to make difficult calls balancing the needs of players, parents, and resources,” Ellsmere said. “In both cases, I focused on listening to all sides, making informed choices, and ensuring the best outcome for the community.”
He said coaching and firefighting have taught him the value of teamwork and respect.
“In politics, as in any community role, we need to find common ground to get things done,” Ellsmere added. “I believe in listening, understanding different perspectives, and working towards solutions that benefit everyone—not just one political side.”
When asked how he plans to make life easier for residents, Ellsmere said by focusing on real, tangible solutions—lowering costs for families, improving local infrastructure, and ensuring our communities have the resources they need.
“Whether it’s better support for first responders, more funding for youth programs, or stronger healthcare services,” Ellsmere expressed, “I will always fight for policies that directly improve people’s lives.”
In five years, Ellsmere wants to see a thriving, safe, and supportive community where families can afford to live, kids have opportunities to succeed, and public services meet our needs.
“My role will be to advocate for policies and investments that help achieve that vision—ensuring our area remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” Ellsmere said.
He added that he has dedicated his life to serving—whether it’s as a firefighter, coach, or local leader.
“Now, I’m asking for the opportunity to continue that service as your MPP,” Ellsmere expressed. “I will always put our area first, listen to your concerns, and fight for real solutions that make a difference. Let’s build a stronger future together!”
The election takes place on February 27th.
